My Scotch/Irish and Ukrainian ancestors immigrated to Canada in the 1800s. However, I grew up in Encinitas, a small town on the coast of North San Diego County, California. After university in Northern California, and following a stint in the Peace Corps in Pakistan as a volunteer trainer of English teachers, I moved to Prague, Czech Republic, where I worked in advertising from 1991 to 1999. I also met my wife Veronika there. In 2003 I "repatriated" to Canada to make a family and home in Victoria, BC. Veronika and I have two boys, age 10 and 12. My family enjoys nature and we regularly get out hiking and camping. My single greatest passion is surfing, which I started at age four and took up seriously at age 11. If anything, I am an ocean person. But I am also a keen cyclist, play blues harmonica, and I love jazz. My interests include the arts, particularly music, film and modern dance, and the sciences, especially astronomy, oceanography and meteorology. I read mostly non-fiction and philosophy. Following my sons' interest in Scouting, I am now a Scout Leader. I am a member of the Odd Fellows Victoria, a charitable organization established in Victoria over 150 years ago; a member of the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental organization; and I support Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Amnesty International, among other charities supporting the environment and human rights.
